{30x30 pt15&16} The Good, The Bad & The Hockey

Hi everyone, this will have to be a catch up blog as I spent last night lying in bed, drinking Tazo tea and reading fashion mags.  So now for my news:

The Good:
I received an exciting phone call on Monday from a local community centre, offering me a contract position as a Community Health Worker! For those of you who didn't know, I completed my Bachelor of Social Work degree in April 2010 but found it difficult to get a job in my field so I have been working in admin/event planning for the past 9 months.  I start my new job this week and I am very excited to put my compassion and altruism to good use!

The Bad:
I received my first negative blog comment the other day on my Clueless post and it cut deep.  Now I understand why Britney Spears went off the rails with all the media attention glaring into her private life! Ok, the comment wasn't shaving my head bad but it still stung.

Here's the comment:

Jennifer Hodgkins said...

wow. this post gives women a real bad rep. you're advertising that you only care about shoes and glee? wow. stunned.

Here's how I responded:
@Jennifer- I was making a joke about myself, not about women in general.  I'm a University educated Social Worker so I care about much more than shoes and Glee.  I am sorry that you took my satirical post in a negative way.

What do you think? Would you be offended if someone commented negatively on your blog?

The Hockey:
My best friend received two free tickets to the Sens (Ottawa's NHL team) game last night and she gave them to the boy and I.  I've lived in Ottawa for almost 5 years now and it's always been on my mini bucket list to go see a game so I jumped at the opportuntity.  We ate pizza, I drank a wine spritzer and I was cheering a bit too loudly (so much so that the woman in front of me was shooting me evil daggers) Well actually she might have been glaring because I was pronouncing the players' names incorrectly (was his last name not Canneloni?) and cat whistling at the youngins'.  All of this aside, I couldn't really get into the game because even though we had great seats (4th row) I could only see half the ice.  So we left after the first period, with me trying to discreetly climb the steps in my leopard print stilettos (ya I did).

  1. Hi Cutie Pie! Ugh! I can't believe you got that comment. It would totally upset me, too. Yuck. Why can't the haters keep it to themselves? By the way, I love a dub dub your awesome outfits! That ring and the leopard shoes are to die for. AWESOME!

  4. I got one neg comment so far and though I didn't like it that much, it was on an interview so it wasn't directly to me.
Still very rude but I thought meh, you don't deserve a second from me!

Sorry you had to read that in your blog! It was soo nice to see you today!

  5. I read that post and I didn't take it at all the way that reader did! I think when reading blogs it's important for the reader to remember that you're only seeing a small part of the writer's self (the part they feel inclined to share). It's completely unreasonable for that person to jump to the conclusion that you're unintelligent (clearly not true) or that you're making some kind of statement for women everywhere (also not true) because of one light-hearted post on your blog that's mostly about fashion.... Anyway, I know you didn't quite ask for it, but I just wanted to add my two cents on the topic :) I'm so sorry you had to deal with that! It would have made me upset too.

    You look great, girl!

    xoxo,
    Amanda

  6. Sometimes people think the internet is an excuse to act like a bully. I'm sorry that happened. I'm glad you found a great job. I took that post completely differently. Haters gonna hate. Have a great week, and keep being fabulous.

  7. Em you are (and always have been) very intelligent and inspiring. Don't let one dokey reader bring you down sis! All your other readers understand that you are just being your quirky self and love you for it! Stay smiling sis, you're beautiful :)

  8. I don't know why people think they have a right to judge others ... especially on a blog when she has never met you in real life.
If we all were given the task of being a perfect representation of all women on Earth that would be quite a bit of pressure.
You never really know someone until you walk a mile in their shoes ... for you that would be your leopard print stilettos!

  9. I would be hurt by a negative comment, too. I feel your pain, buddy.

That said, the world is full of damaged people who spread negativity so we need to protect ourselves from the venom they spit. I give no weight to vitriol and encourage you to disregard it, too.

A constructive criticism from a close-friend might mean something; an ignorant remark from a stranger means nothing.

  10. Oh everyone thanks so much- I'm tearing up reading your sweet comments! I agree that negative comments should be brushed off-not deserving of our time and effort. You are all wonderful and beautiful individuals both inside and out! @Molly- walking a mile in my leopard print heels one might experience severe blistering and start to respect a woman who can stand tall in those puppies ;) @Amanda-I always appreciate constructive two cents :) I love the blogging community-great support <3

  11. Don't take this the wrong way, but I will play devil's advocate here...I agree that when one gets negative comments, it hurts (I have been subjected to one myself so I know where you are coming from) however, I think the person who wrote it made a good point as well...even today, women have to struggle to be recognized for their intelligence rather than other more superficial attributes, much more so than men and especially in particular fields (but I won't get into that)...although your blog post was meant to be funny, I can also see how it may have come across as offensive and demeaning to women in general (I have to admit that I was also taken aback by it)...We should celebrate our intelligence instead of downplaying it especially on a public platform such as the internet...since you are obviously an intelligent individual why not call attention to that instead?
On another note, if there is one thing I personally took away from my negative comment, it was that regardless of how it made me feel, it also made me more reflective about the kind of content I place on my blog....it is public and it is a reflection of a part of you ( no matter how big or small) not everyone will agree with what you say and not everyone will be in support of it either...just keep that in mind and chalk it up as a good learning experience...

  12. Hey there
So sorry about the negative post. Was it a troll or spammer that got through. I had a troll following me for a bit. No negative comment, but VERY creepy (it was a dude)
I think you handled it just fine and anyone that actually follows you knows you are not just interested in shoes and
    Glee!

    You are rock'n the 30 for 30
You mentioned that you are a country music fan too
I will be going to CMA Fan Fest in June WOO HOO
chin up and lots of happy thoughts coming your way
    Brett

oh yea... Super congrats on the new job!

  13. Okay first I have to tell you that I love those leopard heels and that skirt is AWESOME!!! That bright colored blouse is so gorgeous on you too.

Second, I was going to say what Amanda said - so I'm glad I read through the comments first. And while I understand what Love K said about the internet being public and needing to be careful what you put out there, at the same time, your blog is YOUR blog to do with whatever you want. If people don't agree with something you say or are offended by your content, they don't have to read it.

I would most definitely be hurt by a negative comment but just know that you are loved and supported WAY more than not!

  14. @K- I respect and appreciate what you are saying and having worked in various women's organizations, I understand women's fight for equality. I do however agree with @Melissa that my blog should be a place where I can be honest about myself. I am an intelligent woman but there are things I would like to be more informed of (like world news). @Silvergirl & @Shybiker told me how interesting the Huffinton Post is and because of their comments I have started reading it!

I hope that I haven't offended anyone, I was simply making a satirical remark about myself, I certainly am not trying to represent all women that would be a lot to live up to!)

On a different note- @Silvergirl- I am super jealous that you are attending the CMA Fan Fest! Last summer I saw Keith Urban in concert and even got to grab his arm! I haven't washed my hand since...hahah just kidding!

  15. OMG! Congrats on the job, girl! That's awesome. I completed my Crim/Soc degree last December and interned at the community education office at Planned Parenthood...I loved it, so I think I'd be loving your new position, too. Good luck! Now, if only I could find a job in my field...bah.

Sorry to hear about the negative comment. I don't think I've received any all-out bashing comments, but I've gotten a few that were kind of like, "hmm...should I be offended by this, or not?" I typically don't dwell on it too much, though. I guess if we're putting ourselves out there all out on the internet, we can expect that someone is going to say something. Sometimes, those "somethings" are not the nicest...but still, think of all the nice comments you DO get!

  16. A huge congratulations on the job! That is super exciting!

As for negative comments, they are not that fun to get, to be sure, but just brush them off. Not worth it!

  17. I'm sorry about the negative comment. I think sometimes people comment without really reading and understanding.

  18. You have to lead a very dull life to bother leaving negative comments on peoples blogs. If I disagree with a post or do have a negative thought towards it I just leave the blog and don't bother commenting, there is just no need to be mean.

  19. I agree with those saying that it takes a sad and negative person to make a mean comment on a fun post. We should be supportive of others. Also I think Love K has some good points. Like her i like to analyze why certain thing happen by reflecting & asking questions.

Yes, It's hard for women to get respect and equality in this world. But,You don't give women a bad rep. I enjoy your blog, it's fun and adorable. There are times when you are smart and honest too.

One of my daily joys is reading the lovely comments you leave. It may take a day or two (or three, depending on how hectic life gets!) but I will stop by your slice of the blogosphere soon! xo Emily
