corn makes me cough

Growing up I resisted eating my veggies just like any kid (and now the majority of my diet consists of veggies, go figure!) but my least favourite veggie was corn.  My Mum would buy the frozen corn and serve it plain alongside a starch and meat and I hated the sweet flavour.  One time when I was eating the corn I coughed and from then on declared that 'corn makes me cough' and refused the yellow kernels.  It wasn't until after I got my braces off in High School that I tried my first corn on the cob slathered in butter & salt.  It was love at first bite and now I can say proudly that 'corn makes me salivate'.

Besides butter (or in my case Earth Balance vegan spread) and sea salt, I also love local corn on the cob flavoured with lime, cayenne powder & cumin. There's a recipe in my Grilling Vegan Style BBQ cookbook that I'm looking forward to testing out next summer- spicy corn with black beans & zucchini!

Now that summer's officially over, I tend to gravitate towards autumn vegetables like butternut squash, rutabagas, turnip & potatoes.  I save the corn for my home decor, like these beautiful ornamental Indian corn I picked up at my local farmer's market that I currently have displayed on my dining room table.

What's your food relationship with corn?

  1. I'd much rather eat corn on the cob than the frozen stuff! It's really good when grilled. YUM.

Love your blouse, I love ruffles! The pattern on the pants is fun too!

  3. Those pants are fabulous on you. And I love, love, love corn. But, definitely prefer it on the cob as opposed to any other way. Or, even cut off the cob in a fresh side dish. So good!

  4. Love this look! My parents made corn all the time when I was younger and never really liked it. They always served canned corn. Corn on the cob is a whole other story of awesomeness!

  10. mmmmmm.... corn!! There is nothing I love more than creamed corn. My mother may have forgotten to be home when I showed up for Thanksgiving (she did show up - she'd just made an emergency trip to the grocery store), and snubbed me for my niece and nephew but she did get me creamed corn!!

  14. Unless you count potatoes, corn is my favorite veggie. I LOVE it on the cob, with butter and salt, but cumin and lime is delicious too. (I can't imagine it could be bad ANY way!) Now I'm hungry...
Anyway, I love this look, your pants coordinate with all the pretty leaves!
