child of the 80s

Cropped Pants-Gap; Tank- Swapped; Blouse, Belt, Shoes, Rings & Hat- Thrifted

This thrifted chapeau is bucket-hat-meets-fedora and as soon as I put it on my head, my man said I looked like Debbie Gibson. She was a popular singer in the 80s (who I'd never heard of before because I was just a wee baby at the time), and besides her vocal chords she was known for her sassy black hat (kind of like this one).  Although I don't remember anything about the 80s, it's fun to see some of the era's fashion staples come back in style.  My favourite looks from the 80s are legwarmers, shoulder pads & fashion leggings.  80s styles I hope to never see again? Smiley face t-shirts, high top sneakers & scrunchies (see Berger, Carrie's not the only one who thinks scrunchies are a fashion atrocity!

(You can't tell in the photos but these shoes sparkle and shine!)

What's on your list of fashion hits & misses from the 80s?

  1. as teen of the 80's i wore all of those fashions but i think the smiley face t's were more of a 70's thing

  3. emily, i used to own debbie gibson's tape it was called out of the blue. i own a couple bucket hats. i bought in the 2000's. 80's fashion misses for me were the bad hair, totally guilty, & shoulder pads. i was guilty of that too.

80's misses for me, since I was young I'll forgive it, but I was totally into crimped hair. There. I said it. Ugg.

  6. You look so cute in that hat! I can commiserate with the teasing: when I wear my trench coat B calls me Mary Tyler Moore :) On my hit list from the 80s...oodles of pearls, thanks to madonna. I agree with you that scrunchies belong on the miss list!

  7. Like you, I was very little in the 80s and don't remember them at all - sadly , there are far too many photos to remind me of my fashion atrocities of the 80s. And, I couldn't agree more - scrunchies are the worst. I actually made a joke during the olympics that women's gymnastics is the only thing keeping the scrunchie industry alive - but, it's true.

  9. I love this outfit and you totally look like Debbie! I love 1980's fashion and movies. The red belt with those pants gives the overall look a fun pop of color. Sparkle shoes are always the best!

  10. I'm old enough to remember Debbie Gibson! She was like a very innocent Britney Spears but Debbie was known for writing her own songs. I totally used to rock out to "Out of the Blue". Ah, good times. :)

  11. I don't have a list to be honest but colourful leggings were a huge hit in Estonia in the 90s when I started going to school :P but hey, shoulder pads are cool when worn right! and how cool is that hat of yours. I totally like it!

One of my daily joys is reading the lovely comments you leave. It may take a day or two (or three, depending on how hectic life gets!) but I will stop by your slice of the blogosphere soon! xo Emily
