canadian winter photoshoot

For those of you who live in a warm climate, this post is for you!  Wonder why us Northerners rarely take outdoor outfit photos during the winter? I thought I'd demonstrate why!
Step 1: Scout photoshoot location (which if you're as much of a cold hater as I am, means only venturing as far as your condo's courtyard where interesting locations to choose from are lacking) Ah a mini cottage- that will do!

Step 2: Disrobe. Now this is a crucial part of the process as your skin may start to turn blue and your nose will start running in a matter of time so you can't delay (unless of course you think the runny nose will add to the effect of the photoshoot in which case, take all the time you need!)

Step 3: Get into your cheesy pose and with bared teeth tell your photographer to hurry up so you still look pleasant in photos (note that I'm slowly starting to sink into the snow with my impractical boots that have no water or snow proofing capabilities whatsoever)

Step 4: Attempt a different but slightly more awkward pose.  This will prevent your readers from getting bored from the same old hands on your hips look day after day.  Peering into the mini cottage (aka the maintenance man's love shack?) Check!

Step 5: Uncontrollable laughter is captured by photographer as snow is now going into your boots and you are shrinking into the ground.  (Note that your feet are slowly starting to form icicles on your big toe's random hairs that won't shave off no matter how sharp the razor!)

Step 6: Run as fast as you can out of the quick snow (like quick sand but much, much colder), feeling like you're in one of those dreams where you're trying to cross the street but your feet are glued to the middle of the road (does anyone else have those nightmares?)

Step 7: Remember this is a fashion blog so direct the photographer to do a quick zooming in on the accessories, bundle back up and then hurry back inside to a hot cup of cocoa (or spiked apple cider if you really need something to hit the spot!)

Skirt, Belt & Ring- Thrifted; Blouse- Banana Republic (Gifted from ML); Sweater- Costa Blanca; Necklaces- The Bay & Gifted; Nail Polish- Midnight Sky by Sally Hansen; Boots- Spring

  1. Hahaha, I loved your post! Guess what, 36 degrees C here, and I am so happy of going to England next week! So your pictures - lovely, by the way - prepared me for my next months! Anyway, I agree with you. In Germany I used to take outdoors pictures and you are so right: "please, just click, be fast!"
I liked your location, your winter style and the smile! :)

  2. Oh my gosh, this is hilarious! I have so much sympathy for you cold-weather girls. You've earned my respect because you obviously have to suffer for your art. You should do a post on most overused style blogger poses or ask people to submit photos of themselves all in the same pose.

  3. I love this post. The process step-by-step is so hilarious and although I have barely seen more than a couple flakes of snow all winter I have to think that your steps are very true for all of those fashion bloggers actually experiencing a winter this year. Your outfit and accessories are great and I think your poses are cute.

  5. I have a large terrace right outside my living room, and I could probably stomp down a space to take outfit photos but... by myself? Nah, too cold! You are better than me wearing regular boots out in winter though, my feet are the one thing that CAN NOT get cold or I am just absolutely miserable.

  6. LOL, love this post! You have so much more snow than we have in Minnesota right now! But if we did - this post would SO ring true for me! I really like the skirt by the way!

  7. I'm in New Jersey and we're having mild weather and I STILL don't take outdoor outfit photos. My readers are stuck with the boring white walls of my apartment until Spring. You are so brave and devoted!

  13. Great post! Although we don't have that much snow here right now, it was a lot like that last year, for sure. I still have to email you soon about my Ottawa trip!

  14. Wow, that's quite an endeavor! I can't believe all that snow! We're still trying to predict when we'll get our first inch--a far cry from last year's snowy winter. I'd be all about the indoor photos if I were you--that's too cold!

  16. Emily, you are so lucky to have such a good man!! My husband would shoot from inside at the window. You are a trooper to brave that deep snow. The hot drink sounds so appealing right now. Great accessories shot, love the big ring and of course, your nail color, fingers, hands....!!! Ruffle on your blouse is so feminine and pretty. keep warm darling. Suitcase Vignettes xo

  17. How do you have more snow in Ottawa than we do in Winterpeg? We've been spoiled this year, though today was pretty chilly!

  20. Hahahahaha :) I feel your pain. I take photos outside anyway, but I love cold weather. Been missing the snow this winter, although the sunny days have been wonderful.

One of my daily joys is reading the lovely comments you leave. It may take a day or two (or three, depending on how hectic life gets!) but I will stop by your slice of the blogosphere soon! xo Emily
