I'm officially addicted to my gold sparkly flats from Payless Shoes so I thought to myself why not DIY a pair? I grabbed a pair of flats that were on their last leg, took a trip to Michael's Arts & Crafts and started bedazzling!
For this project I used:
-a pair of flats
-Mod Podge gloss
-Mod Podge gloss clear acrylic sealer
-Martha Stewart glitter in Azurite
-painter's tape
-foam paintbrush
-tupperware container
-& tinfoil (I am Tinfoil Tiaras after all!)
1) Clean your shoes of any dirt or residue and remove embellishments (these shoes had plastic rings that I cut off with scissors)
2) Create a mixture of Mod Podge and glitter- the more glitter you use, the less coats you will need to apply. I used a tupperware container to avoid ruining my fine china (ha!)
3) Stuff the shoes with tinfoil so as to prevent drips. You can also use painter's tape to line the edges (but I found it slipped off so just use a steady hand when tracing over the details).
4) Use your paintbursh (I preferred the foam kind) and start painting on the Mod Podge/glitter mixture. (If you've just had a professional manicure this may not be the DIY project for you. If, like me, you paint your own nails while watching re-runs of The Office then you should be fine!)
5) Wait for the first coat to dry before applying a second. The shoe on the left is freshly painted and the shoe on the right is dry (the mixture will appear transparent on the shoes). It took me 4 coats to get the desired effect. Cover the excess mixture with plastic wrap between coats).
6) Once the final coat has dried, spray a coat of Mod Podge sealer over the shoes. Let the shoes dry overnight before wearing. (Both flats are from Payless Shoes, the pair on the left are DIY and the pair on the right I paid $30 for).
And voila you have a pair of sparkly flats that even Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz would be jealous of!

Whoa. Forrrrrealsies?? This is an awesome DIY. I might actually be able to duplicate this, which would be amazing for me because I suck at DIYs. I'm not a creative person when it comes to these.

Cool DIY! This I could probably do. I lost my silver flats, so this would be a good way to get my silver shoes back! Good job :-)

How well does the moge podge stand up to the stress of walking? My previous DIY shoe projects were failures because of cracking where the shoe bends as you walk.

ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea! They look fantastic.
ReplyDeleteUmm, this is awesome! Your version of glitter flats look so professional, I really love the blue color. I think I may need to make myself a pair in purple for my halloween costume!
ReplyDeleteNice! Great job! I can't think of a time when I'd need a pair of sparkly flats, but I'm still going to bookmark this. Maybe Halloween?
ReplyDeleteUmmm, what? If I hadn't seen all the steps I would think that you were a fancy witch with magic powers. You are really talented and patient. This is why I'm not a DIY'er, I don't have the patience to make anything. They turned out great!

Awesome - I love how they turned out! I have yet to glitterize a pair of shoes for fear of leaving a trail of sparkles behind. The modge podge method seems like it would hold up better than other methods I've seen...I may need to try this out sometime soon. Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteI gave the glitter treatment to a pair of boots last year but I think I love your flats so much better. I may need to keep an eye out for a pair of flats I can cover in glitter!
