honky-tonk

Howdy partners! If you're wondering where I've been lately, I've been yeehawing in the Lone Star State.  My man had to work in Austin (one of my new favourite American cities) & Houston and since I'm a country girl at heart and have always been curious about the place where everything is bigger, I tagged along.  The weather may not have co-operated (with flash flood warnings for half the trip) but that didn't stop me from boot scootin' boogying all across town.  I explored museums and art galleries; went vintage shopping; ate delicious food (while managing to avoid Texas BBQ) and listened to a lot of country western.

Here are some highlights from my trip:
Texas State Museum where they had a wonderful exhibit on the Women Shaping Texas in the 20th Century

My take on a chic cowgirl.
Food truck garbage cans.
I was ecstatic to see that my favourite Ottawa thrift store was also in Austin (and a much better version of it!)
Cupcakes served from a food truck= delicious convenience.

We had a great Japanese dinner (complete with sake shots served in carved out cucumbers) at the Lucky Robot, followed by live music at the famous Continental Club
Adorable graffiti.
I spent hours perusing Uncommon Objects curiosity shop, fascinating!
Mexican trading store in the Soco district, Austin.
Authentic honky-tonk bar in Houston.
Buck, the only real cowboy (he was a rancher) I met all trip!
Vintage sequins.
Blanco's Bar regular, Dave, leading me to the dance floor to show me how to dance the Texas two Step!
When in Texas...
The Galleria district in Houston
I'll need to return for a live music festival!
Dining table at the Texas State Museum (I found the Texas water to taste a bit fishy, and after taking a shower you smelled like smelt!)
Drinking Lonestar beer and listening to the Texas Tyrant at The Continental Club.
Sale-ing at Anthropologie (I bought the pink top, printed silk pants & a floral blouse for under $40, a savings of over $250!)
A poolside visitor.

Passing on my newfound knowledge and teaching my man the 2 step!
Machine gun (apparently they are safer than handguns for newbies but that didn't calm my nerves!) target shooting.

Have you ever visited Texas?

  4. Yee Haw! It's so funny to see you, a Canadian, frolically in the most American of states. Incongruous, for sure. Glad you had fun. The pics are great.

  5. I LOVE YOU, EMILY! And I love that last shot! I'll confess that I abhor hot weather, so I can never live in the South, but I do love country music and the whole country/cowgirl look! You look adorable!

  7. hi Emily! I was seriously wondering where you were. Yes! I have been to Texas. My husband has a daughter there so we visited about 5 years back. Went to the River Walk in San Antonio. Awesome place and the Alamo was very sacred ground. I was impressed.

  12. You look and sound like you are really living it up!! Yay. I'd love exploring those curiosity and thrift shops with you!! I always thought Anthro was way out of my price range but it sounds like they do a good sale! I'm having some serious envy regarding your silk print pants!!! Please show those off on the blog soon. I'm dying to know; it's something I've always wondering....do people look at you weird if you wear cowgirl-y outfits in Texas? Because that would be the first thing I'd want to put on!

One of my daily joys is reading the lovely comments you leave. It may take a day or two (or three, depending on how hectic life gets!) but I will stop by your slice of the blogosphere soon! xo Emily
