pick-up

When I was 16 years old, I got a job working as a historical animator (basically a tour guide who dresses up in periodic clothing) at Fort Malden in rural Ontario. I was far from my home in suburban Nova Scotia and was boarded for two months by a local family and boredom led to rebellious teenage things like smoking cigarettes, sneaking out of the house and partying with cute, older boys.  In Amherstburg you either listened to country music... or country music.  Without much choice I begrudgingly would turn the car radio to one of the various local country stations. After hearing "Whiskey Lullaby" I was hooked and have been in love with this hillbilly genre of music ever since.

So when I had the chance to rent a pick-up truck for a week while our car was in the shop for hail damage I hollered yeehaw, grabbed my vintage cowboy boots & prepared for 7 days of living out my cowgirl fantasy.

The pick-up didn't have the luxuries of my Audi that I've become accustomed to (particularly the built in GPS, reversing camera, blindspot indicators & heated seats, it's a hard life I tell ya!) but driving this monster truck (which I basically had to leap into & fall out of) was incredibly fun and had me daydreaming about living on a hobby farm & listening to country music day in and day out.

I may live like a city slicker but I'm a country gal at heart! Yeehaw!

  9. You make a pretty adorable country girl! The closest thing to country music that I listen to is Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood (and I know they're not *real* country). And we all went through that rebellious teenage phase...

  10. Emily, you look ADORABLE! I totally LOVE country music, which seriously makes a lot of people wonder why someone like moi would, especially because I grew up in the Philippines and am totally a flaming liberal. But, there's nothing like country, and I love it!

  11. looking good emily! i remember you mentioning you liked country music. where are the photos of 16 yr old tour guide or even rebellious you? ;) oh, the photo of the bald guy holding my nephew baby jj, on my blog is my bro n-law not my husband. i can see how you'd get them confused though. i mean they are related, & both have bald heads. of course i think my guy's cuter.

  12. My father-in-law always had a 1/4 ton truck for hauling stuff out to the dump, but recently traded it and his SUV in for a 1/2 ton truck. He pretty much just hands over the keys to it when I show up at the door. I love trucks so much - especially the looks I get when people see this little tiny girl jumping out of a big truck!

  15. You're too cute Emily! Life hands your lemons and you make lemonade and throw a party. One summer I was on the rebound and I dated a cute older guy with a big honking shiny red pickup truck that he would let me drive and I tell you, I felt HOT in it. That's the only time in my life where I could kind of understand men with their 'status' cars. Love your jacket btw!

One of my daily joys is reading the lovely comments you leave. It may take a day or two (or three, depending on how hectic life gets!) but I will stop by your slice of the blogosphere soon! xo Emily
