Blazer & Pants- Thrifted; Boots- Aldo; Knee Highs- Gap; Ring- Fashion Museum of Bath, UK; Earrings- Nia Kaia; Nail Polish- Midnight Sky by Sally Hansen Sometimes an outfit starts with an item of clothing but more often for me I start with an accessory and build the ensemble around a pair of shoes, a hat or a piece of jewellery. I bought this pair of earrings back in December at a launch party for local jewellery designer Leah Clement. They are part of the Nia Kaia line, sustainable jewellery that is designed to make women "look and feel good without harming people or the planet". I've been waiting for the perfect outfit in which to incorporate these earrings and decided on my bright red vintage blazer (complete with shoulder pads- my homage to Super Bowl Sunday!), a pair of skinny black pants and my favourite boots. I wore this yesterday for a delicious gourmet grilled cheese sandwich, followed by a breathtaking performance of The Walk, an Ottawa play about women being trafficked into the sex industry. |
For someone that is an ethical consumer when it comes to food, I find it important to wear sustainable clothing (hence my love for thrifting) and jewellery when possible. My Nia Kaia earrings are made from recycled cardboard, handmade paper created from renewable sources and gold beeswax paint.
Do you enjoy wearing sustainable clothing (thrifted, vintage or eco-friendly pieces) or would you prefer to shop retail?
I am absolutely all for sustainable clothing where possible.
ReplyDeleteI really like your red blazer!
I love this - such a bold look. And the fact that the jewelry is ethical is all the better. I try to be as ethical of a consumer as I can be.

That is an amazing blazer!! Wow!
ReplyDeleteLove the earring. I wear some hand me down and thrift clothes.
ReplyDeleteemily you look elegant, bun hair, crimson blouse, & sky boots. i want to know what was on that gourmet grilled cheese! will you share please? ;) i'm a thrifting queen. i prefer my jewelry to be made by people who love me, like friends & family.
ReplyDeleteI think sustainable clothing is always a great way to go if you can. I personally love thrifting - it's like a treasure hunt. But some things, like jeans, I prefer to buy retail. But less about that and more about this outfit! I really adore that blazer! It's very bold and the color looks amazing on you. I love that you kept things minimal and let it be the vocal point of the outfit.

LOVE them all, Emily! and I am really trying to shop more thrifted. It's been pretty easy, which is a surprise!

I like the idea of sustainable clothing, but I don't have much, just a few pieces of jewelry. I just bought a blazer with shoulder pads too! I kind of felt like a football player or one of those corporate professional ladies from the 1980s.
ReplyDeleteI do the exact same thing as far as begin with accessories! Sometimes all you need is the right bracelet or earrings to dream up an entire outfit! & those earrings are absolutely gorgeous, love the plus that they are made without hurting the environment. & fantastic thrifting finds. Super kudos for finding awesome pants that fit (I have trouble finding them in just dept. stores)!
ReplyDeletehave a good one!

I can't believe you thrifted those gorgeous boots. I want to be so lucky. I love this outfit on you, think you should include that blazer in your Valentine's day ensemble. You know I am a thriftaholic and would wear all thrifted if possible. Have a great day Emily. dawn suitcase vignettes xo
ReplyDeleteThis is a massively awesome jacket :) I love vintage clothing and am lucky there's so much of it in New York, although unfortunately it can get very expensive very quickly!
ReplyDeleteLove the red blazer and those earrings are gorgeous. About 90% of my jewelry is fair trade. Mostly because I like to buy my stuff from real artisans, but also I've noticed that hand made jewelry is just more durable and better made than the stuff from Target. I try to shop as sustainably as possible but every now & then I do cave & buy a bunch of new stuff.
ReplyDeleteThose earrings are amazing! What a great look all together!
ReplyDeleteLet me.just say that blazer accentuates your waist & makes the "girls" look great
ReplyDeletehope I'm not creeping you out with that statement
earrings are pretty fab too

This is a fabulous blazer and the color red looks great on you! We both love thrifting. There are so many great clothes, sometimes still new or inexpensive, why pay full price if you don't have to?
ReplyDeleteI love the shoulder pads being a nod to football! And the idea of "sustainable clothing". It may be sustainable when you do it, but I do it because it's cheap!
ReplyDeleteI love shopping thrift stores and consignment shops - it is usually way more fun than shopping retail to me. It's the thrill of the hunt, you know? I love your blazer - great color and shape and those earrings are stunning!

so like the whole look.,
ReplyDeleteThose are great earrings! I have a few pairs that are made with real butterfly wings; they were butterflies on a preserve that died naturally, and the proceeds from the sale of the butterfly-jewelery go back to the butterfly reserve, which I think is great. Only place I've seen them selling is in the museums around the city though, and got mine at the War Museum weirdly enough haha. At this point in my life, I far prefer thrifting or vintage. Unless I need underthings or absolute basics that are just easier or more sanitary to buy new, I feel like my money is better spent elsewhere than retail.
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking of an idea for a post last week and wondering if anyone else actually builds their outfits around a piece of jewelry like I do - I guess you beat me to the punch! What's that saying about great minds... ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love that red blazer - has a very 80s feel and look great on you!
Those are really cool earrings. I like the red jacket, it's stunning on you. I Iike it too that you left the neck bare, so simple yet sassy and fabulous!
