om mani padma hung

Dress (worn as a skirt)- Dynamite (worn like this); Tank & Shoes- Thrifted; Vest & Necklace- Smart Set; Nail Polish- Baby Blue by Nicole by OPI
I recently read a very interesting article in Macleans (a liberal Canadian magazine) entitled "Pest Control for Vegans."  It talked about how vegetarian and vegan restauranteers struggle with the issue of killing pests (like rodents and bugs) for the fear of being labelled as 'hypocritical.'  Some believe that a clean kitchen is more important than a clean conscience where as other argue that you should bring the same morals used in food preparation to the issue of pest control.

I've been a vegetarian for the past five years for animal rights but even though I wasn't raised in a meatless home, my Mum instilled in me the importance of respecting all living creatures.  When it rained, my Mum would bundle up myself, my younger sister and the kids from the home daycare she ran.  We would save the homeless worms by picking them up with keys (or our bare hands, depending on the day) and dig holes for them in the dirt.  If a spider was in the house my sister and I weren't allowed to kill it, instead we would trap the spider with a glass and a magazine to bring outside.  To this very day I make sure to avoid stepping on worms and (if no one's looking), I'll pick them up and move them away from danger.  Just last night my arachnophobic boyfriend asked me to deal with the huge spider who was lurking in our living room so I whisked it outside with a credit card bill and beer mug.

Buddhists suggest chanting the prayer "Om Mani Padma Hung" for every bug you step on or for every rodent you kill so that they are born as a human in their next life with the chance of being enlightened (although I could do without mosquitos, maggots, ants and hornets being re-born thank you very much!)

Have a fab weekend everyone and the next time you're thinking of squashing that spider think to yourself "what would Tinfoil Tiaras do?" and maybe send a Buddhist prayer its way! ;)

  1. i think it's neat that your mother taught you not to kill creatures. i have killed many a bug in front of my daughter and now feeling a little bad about it. but sometimes it's just so hard. like those little pesky moths that keep eating my cashmere sweaters!

  4. You are my kindred spirit! I've been a vegan for over a year and a vegetarian for 16 years. I means so much to me when I hear about people being kind to all animals including bugs. My pest control method is to keep a very clean house so as to discourage pests in the first place. When they do make it into my home, well...I go hide in another room until they sneak back into the walls or under the couch. If I don't see them, they're not there, right?

I love the idea of saying a Buddhist prayer for those bugs we accidentally step on. I'm a semi-Buddhist too (need to start up my practice again).

Thanks for the thoughtful post. Have a great weekend!

  5. Fabulous outfit :)

I have been a vegetarian for only 6 months now and I am enjoying the health benefits. I guess I'm not quite at the point where I think twice about killing a cockroach in my house or a mosquito landing on me...but I will start saying the prayer!

  7. I hate spiders but I haven't killed one in years. I figure they are probably just as scared of me as I am of them and I feel a bit bad to kill it...I just usually try to get it away from me. Btw love your outfit and that blue polish, very pretty :) Lovely blog, I'm following...would love if you could stop by mine soon :)

  10. I don't mind bugs outside the house - but if they come in - no mercy. Except daddy long legs, if they keep to themselves. last summer there were two living in the bathroom. chillin up in the corner, watching me shower. damn peeping toms they were. I named one bob.

  11. I was told not to kill creatures. I still move spiders outdoors instead of killing them and move snails/worms aside and out of the path - I think it's nice to think that way.

I really like your outfit, your skirt is lovely and your skirt is very pretty.
